KOCH Further Expands Home Video Content with
New Label Agreements
(Port Washington, NY) June 20, 2006 – KOCH Entertainment Distribution is pleased to announce that it has again expanded its home video label roster by signing exclusive North American distribution agreements with Cinema Epoch, Lifesize Entertainment and Lance Entertainment.
Cinema Epoch is a new DVD label formed by distribution veteran Gregory Hatanaka whose credits include John Woo's The Killer, the films of Academy-Award recipient Satyajit Ray and arthouse legend Claude Chabrol, and the kung fu classic Master of the Flying Guillotine. The company's first DVD releases will include The Mummy's Kiss: 2nd Dynasty, I Was A Teenage Movie Maker - a documentary on the sci-fi/horror films of Don Glut, author of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back novel, Mad Cowgirl, a Narrative-Experimental-Art-Comedy-Horror-Tragedy-Kung Fu epic, and Urban Tales Short, a series of inspirational urban/inner city short films. The company’s theatrical releases include Mad Cowgirl, opening in New York on July 19 and Blood Tea and Red String, a stop-motion animated film in the tradition of Jan Swankmajer and The Brothers Quay.
"We are delighted to be working with KOCH and look forward to bringing our exciting eclectic brand of international cinema to audiences," says Hatanaka.
Lance Entertainment, Inc. was founded by Richard Gersh and Robert Lancellotti in 1995 for the purpose of licensing high-quality video programming for distribution into the North American home video market. Lance has built a market leading position in the United Sates for the murder mystery genre. Lance acquires, positions, packages and releases on DVD previously produced high-quality films and mini-series successfully broadcast, or scheduled to be broadcast, on television. Many of these titles have achieved critical acclaim and built devoted audiences through television exposure on such major national series as “Masterpiece Theatre” and “Mystery!” as well as cable channels such as PBS, BBC America, A&E and The History Channel. The Company has 60 licensed titles including the mysteries of Agatha Christie, P.D. James, Ruth Rendell, Dick Francis, Val McDermid and Georges Simenon; dramatized biographies of Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill and John F. Kennedy, classics such as The Old Man and The Sea and critically acclaimed series such as Wire In The Blood (all currently under license to KOCH Vision).
Going into 2007 Lance is focusing on acquiring series that are currently or have recently been featured on television. The emphasis will remain on “name” stars (in September the Company is releasing Richard Burton’s lost masterpiece The Assassination of Trotsky, which was featured on The History Channel), content that was written by a well known writer, or a genre such as British Mystery, which maintains core appeal and constantly builds in popularity. Lance will be significantly increasing its advertising, publicity and promotional activities while seeking tie-in exploitation campaigns. Among the stars that appear on films exclusive to Lance are Richard Burton, Clive Owen, Russell Crowe, Naomi Watts, Romy Schneider, Robson Green, Anthony Quinn, Bob Hoskins, Helen Mirren, Stacy Keach, Martin Sheen, E.G. Marshall, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Carol Burnett, Walter Matthau, Jacqueline Bisset, and Michael Gambon.
Dick Gersh, President and CEO of Lance Entertainment commented, “KOCH has done a remarkable job for us from the moment that we began working with them. It has been more like an ideal partnership than a distribution arrangement and we believe that together we will build Lance into one of the ‘gem’ companies in our industry.”
Founded by Bruce Frigeri, Lifesize Entertainment began as a worldwide sales agent in 1997, specializing in European Arthouse and American Independent film. In 2003, the company took the next step in its evolution and began North American theatrical distribution, releasing high profile films such as Academy Award nominee ZUS & ZO and Independent Spirit Award nominee OASIS. Sensing opportunity, Lifesize expanded again in 2004, creating an in house Home Entertainment division, spearheaded by Vice President Jim McNally and Acquisitions Manager Marc Hughes. An alliance was formed with Hollywood Video leading to increased exposure and immediate status as a provider of quality monthly releases. Early hits included BAD GUY by Kim Ki-Duk and THE RIVER by Jarmo Lampela. With roughly a half dozen theatrical and a dozen video releases annually, Lifesize Entertainment continues to be a prominent player in North American arthouse and indie film.
Key titles in the recent past include Kim Ki-Duk's BAD GUY, Sundance award-winning doc WALL, French sleeper hit GAMBLERS and Lee Chang Dong's stunning OASIS. Forthcoming releases include the festival favorite RYNA, Andrew Berends' riveting behind-the-scenes Iraqi doc THE BLOOD OF MY BROTHER (opens theatrically June 30th in NYC), and the very funny German comedy KEBAB CONNECTION (opening in theatres end of July).
"KOCH’s success with Arthouse and Indie titles makes this a perfect fit for a growing label like ours," said Lifesize Entertainment President Bruce Frigeri, adding "We're excited about our future together."
